Hymn Writing 101!

Facilitator: Gord Burnett, Sanctuary Choir Director, Ann-Marie MacDairmid, Director of music

Our world is ever-changing and has changed considerably since our present hymn books were published. It has been about 25 years since the present Book of Praise hit the pews, a generation ago already. How is the world represented in the hymns we sing today? How do we use our hymns to include and make everyone feel valued and welcome? Now is your chance! On Sunday, September 24 at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Kitchener, you will have an opportunity to use your creativity to address questions like these. You will be able to write new words to existing hymns, original words to well-known tunes or new words with or without tunes. You will be working in teams or individually if you prefer. The session will look at the role of hymns in worship and beyond, what areas we need to add new hymns, how we teach new hymns and how to write new hymns. A light supper will follow the session. We will showcase our work at an evening hymn=sing in Covenant Chapel. It is going to be great! Looking forward to seeing you there! This is a free event, open to members of the community. A special shout-out to young adults, youth and children. Your voices are important to us.

Schedule: Sunday, September 24, 2023

Food4Kids Sunday

We’re thrilled to have Lorri Detta, Executive Director of Food4Kids Waterloo Region, as our guest speaker.

Lorri brings over 20 years of non-profit career, governance, and direct volunteer experience working with many large and grassroots organizations focused on the mental, physical, and social well-being of at-risk children and youth. She is passionate about ensuring that no child goes hungry, especially during the nine weeks of summer break when vulnerable kids face the fear of being without food support.

During the service, Lorri will share her inspiring journey and shed light on how Food4Kids Waterloo Region is helping to feed the hungry children they support.

Remember to bring snack foods or a jar of peanut butter - your contribution will help ensure that these children have access to the nutritious meals they need during the summer break. Donations can be left just outside the chapel door.s

After the service, Lorri will be available in Iona Hall to answer any questions you may have and provide further information about Food4Kids Waterloo Region's mission.

On the Sunday after Easter, our worship service will focus on Meeting God in Creation.  The hymns, prayers, readings, anthems, children's time, and messages will all encourage us to experience God in the natural. world. Several members of the Mission Committee and others will be participating .in the leadership of worship that day. The hand bell choir will be playing two beautiful pieces.  It is sure to be an uplifting and inspiring service. And there is a special activity planned for the Coffee Hour following the service. The children especially are encouraged to come and participate. Please consider wearing something BRIGHT that day, even if you are worshipping via television or live-streaming.  We do this to remind ourselves that the joy of the resurrection continues. The celebration of Easter is not limited to one Sunday only.

Good Friday

Good Friday

Join us on Good Friday for a beautiful performance of John Rutter's Requiem, conducted by our choir director, Gord Burnett. This exceptional work, written in 1985 after the death of the composer's father, takes the listener on a journey from darkness to light with its seven movements consisting of text from the Mass for the Dead, the Book of Common Prayer, and the Psalms. The organ and six-instrument ensemble version of the Requiem, which stands well on its own compared to the full-orchestra version, will be performed and is a must-see for anyone looking to enhance their Holy Week observances. Plus, follow us on Facebook to enjoy a series of short videos made by John Rutter to get a sneak peek before the performance!

Maundy Thursday

Maundy Thursday

The Maundy Thursday service is an Agape Meal, which commemorates Jesus’ commandment to love one another. The term ‘maundy’ comes from the Latin word ‘mandatum’, meaning commandment. It is a deeply spiritual service that encourages both reflection and engagement with each other.

This year, we hope to hold the service in our newly renovated Covenant Chapel. To ensure that everyone is accommodated, we ask that you sign up for the service, as it will include a light meal consisting of soup, cheese, crackers, fruit, and wine.

Please let us know if you have any food allergies or dietary restrictions, such as gluten or vegetarian cheese. The soup provided will be vegan. We look forward to sharing this meaningful experience with you.

Planning Giving Sunday

  • St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Kitchener (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

We don’t have to be millionaires to leave a legacy. A gift of any size, given in faith and entrusted to God, is a seed that grows.

Congregations and ministries across our denomination have seen generosity bring life to vital new programs. People have been blessed.

Congregations have been strengthened. And seeds of hope have been planted for generations to come.

Everyone leaves a legacy.

This Sunday our congregation will reflect on the long-term impact of our gifts of time, talent and treasure. It’s a great time for us to think about how our gifts today and in the future can participate in God’s mission.

Blue Christmas

Sometimes Christmas is sad and difficult - especially if a loved one has died.  The 'Holly Jolly Christmas' may feel empty and meaningless and you may just want it to be OVER.  If you are feeling 'blue' about the season, please come to a special service on Wednesday, Dec. 28 at 7 pm here at St. Andrew's.  The purpose is not to cheer you up, but to give you an opportunity to sit with your true feelings and sense the depth of your sadness and loss.  Someone important in your life is not with you anymore.  That's important!  Come and worship the God who understands broken hearts and is ready to be with you in your sorrow. Tears will be welcome. Everyone experiencing grief is encouraged to come.
